I am committed to building a city, state, and country where all children get a childhood where they can make mistakes and be given the opportunity to heal, learn, and grow. We have asked will America be America to Black Children? The answer right now is no. But it doesn't have to be. We've demonstrated an ability to unite broad layers of people, and win them to a Healthy Communities model. The stakes in our success or failure could not be higher.
My journey to RISE For Youth, started with my own childhood challenges. I was kicked out of high school with a thick disciplinary record. I was able to find a path forward, get my GED and ultimately Bachelors Degree because my Mom and others fought for me as hard as they possibly could *and* because I benefited from white privilege. My mistakes were understood not as a character flaw but as a stage I was growing through. When the police showed up at our house for things I did and things I didn't do, my parents were afforded space to be horrified that I would be considered anything other than innocent. I felt mistreated by police growing up. I was mistreated by police growing up. But it is nothing compared to the way Black kids across Virginia are given few opportunities to succeed, every opportunity to fail, and then that failure is followed by the state of Virginia bringing trauma and punishment in a way that sets Black youth for years and years.
It doesn't have to be this way. At RISE for Youth we are going the #ExtraMile to force a #ParadigmShift in Virginia. We have the ability to build a model in Virginia that we can be proud of. To do that we need your help. Your donation to RISE For Youth will help me meet my goal of raising funds for an organization that has promoted my growth and more importantly fights to ensure the grips of white supremacy are defeated so Black children have a right to grow.
